Our crew tried out the 2 LED Lanterns from Barebones on a recent outdoor expedition (ok it wasn’t an Everest hike if that’s what you thought) to see just how lit these things get.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
Our crew popped open the shipment of the Forest Lantern and the Beacon Hanging Light to unpack the new LED outdoor light set(s). Each lantern comes with it’s own specs and features for outdoor lighting use.
The vintage-inspired lantern has a sleek and classic design with simple on/off push button that also acts as the lights dimmer function. Featuring a rechargeable micro USB, the lantern can easily be recharged at home or on the go. The exterior is a stamped steel and the smooth feel and solid construction of the lantern was an instant hit.

The overall dimensions of the lantern were spot on for the perfect table set up or while hanging from an exterior hook or eve. The lightweight lantern also adds great value as it reduces the bulky-ness of some other lanterns out there.
The Beacon Hanging Lantern light comes with a smooth dimming feature that allows you to completely brighten your surroundings or simply set a mood. The small yet mighty light easily hangs with its carabiner top or stands on its sturdy base (double score). The light has a charging cord that wraps into the unit itself for easy carry and storage of the recharge capability. Battery life lasts 200+ hours on low or three hours on high. And thanks to a convenient battery life indicator, you'll never be left in the dark.

TESTING IT OUT
Lets get lit. By the light, of course.
Our crew took both lanterns out for a spin to see what these lanterns had both in common and what set each apart from the other. Our test included heading out to some rather dark spots (not gonna lie it got sketch out there) and some other common around the “house” spots too (ya know, backyard gathering, etc.)
FOREST LANTERN
First up was the Forest Lantern. This gem measures 6" x 9.5" x 6" and weighs less than an icepack. When we illuminated the LED 5 Watt Cree bulb at its highest (3000k/220 Lumens) we were shocked at the wide range of light it cast in the darkest of locations. At full power and illumination we were able to enjoy more than a couple hours of strong light before it became dim. The 2.5+ hour run time was nothing shy of perfect for an evening after the sun went down. By no means do you even need to hit it full steam- since even a slight dim of the light can cast a pretty solid net of light around you. We noticed the biggest light coverage was east to west vs light above or below you (this is important for those wanting a lantern to illuminate a path below you). Sitting on a table though, this lantern lights up every nook and cranny. Overall, the duration of the light effects, the 4-6 hour full charge time, and the lightweight and sleek design make for a perfect lantern to light up the environment and set the perfect mood.
BEACON HANGING LANTERN
Coming in hot (not really since LED bulbs stay cool) is this 3.75" W x 5" H (6.75" H with carabiner) light that would give the Bat Signal a run for it’s money. With a 3 Watt Cree bulb and a 3000k/30-220 Lumen range this tiny yet mighty LED lantern really kicks. We put this little guy to the test to see what the illumination factor could be and we were impressed. The light coverage does a solid job going both east and west but also south. This lantern did a great job at lighting the path below our feet, and covering a good range of real estate in a 360 degree circle around us. The higher up we held the lantern, the wider the coverage of light. With the added carabiner, the easability of taking the light on an adventure, hanging from a overhang, or even strapping to a backpack, shirt, or bike was a for sure selling point. With a 4-5 hour recharge time, the Beacon really does live up to the name.
