Multi-Tool Overview

What exactly is a multi-tool anyhow? Glad you asked, because knowing what the purpose, functions, and features of a multi-tool is a great first step in understanding this often high ranking EDC gear must have!

A multi-tool is…

A multitool is a pocket-sized tool that combines multiple functions into one handy device. Leatherman and Gerber are two of the most popular brands on the market, but there are many other companies that make multitools as well. The term "EDC" (every day carry) is often used to describe items that are small and useful enough to be carried with you on a daily basis, and a multitool definitely qualifies. Most multitools include a variety of useful tools, such as pliers, screwdrivers, knives, and files. Whether you're an experienced handyman or just looking for a way to be prepared for minor repairs, a multitool is an essential piece of equipment.

What is a Multi-tool used for?

A multi-tool is a small, often pocket-sided tool that can be used for a variety of tasks. The most common type of multi-tool includes a set of pliers, a knife, and a set of screwdrivers. However, there are also multi-tools that feature saws, hammers, and other tools. Depending on the model, a multi-tool can be a useful tool for everything from fixing a loose screw to cutting through rope. In addition, many models include a built-in flashlight, making them ideal for use in dark or difficult-to-reach places. Whether you’re an avid outdoorsman or just someone who likes to be prepared, a multi-tool is an essential piece of equipment.

Leatherman vs. Gerber

When it comes to multitools, two brands stand out above the rest: Leatherman and Gerber. Both companies make high-quality, durable products that are designed to be used in a variety of situations.

Leatherman has been making multitools since 1983, and their experience shows in the quality of their products. Leatherman tools are known for being tough and reliable, and they come with a 25-year warranty. Leatherman also offers a wide range of design options to choose from, so you can find the perfect tool for your needs.

Gerber got its start making knives, but they've since expanded into multitools as well. Gerber offers a variety of different designs, including both folding and fixed blade options. Gerber tools are also known for their durability and reliability, and they come with a limited lifetime warranty.

So, which is the better option? Leatherman or Gerber? Both companies make great products, so it really depends on your individual needs.

TESTING IT OUT

Now the fun part- Testing out the brands’ lineup of multitools. Our crew grabbed hold of the following items from each brand:

GERBER

LEATHERMAN

We tested each multitool like any normal human would- at work, to and fro, casual outings, and while out exploring the outdoors. We then rated each on the following:

  • Tool Components

  • Functionality

  • Durability

…as a added element: the Grab Factor (which one we go for when choosing one when sitting side by side).

THE OUTCOME

  • Tool Components

The Leatherman multitool features 14 tools included in its design. From pliers to wire cutters/strippers, various openers, screwdrivers and blades, this tool is packed with every item you need for fixing a loose screw, cutting some fishing line, and even small measurements with it’s 8 inch ruler.

The Gerber multitool features 12 tools in the design, and also includes pliers, wire cutters, bottle openers and screwdrivers. Minus the ruler like the Leatherman, it does though come with a saw and serrated edge knife.

Overall, Leatherman does have more tools in its comparison model to Gerber, the difference is not by much. Leatherman has the ruler, Gerber is without. However, Gerber features more “cutting” tools with the scissors, saw, and knife.

The Edge: Leatherman for the total number of tools and added ruler

  • Functionality

Leatherman Bond multitool pairs minimal design with highly functional tools for the job at hand. At a mere 5.8 oz, the Bond’s handles are contoured to give you a comfortable grip while using the tools. Perfect for first-time owners or a great backup to existing gear. Bond includes a nylon sheath. Pair it with the Removable Pocket Clip (sold separately) for more carrying options.

Gerber’s Suspension is an open frame multitool with spring-loaded pliers, a SAF.T.PLUS™ locking system, a fine-edge knife, serrated knife, rough cut saw and more. Housed in a ballistic nylon sheath, it’s a lightweight down-and-dirty workhorse. The Suspension is the benchmark tool of convenience and durability. The easily accessed butterfly design features spring-loaded pliers and a lightweight frame for long days and tired hands. With 12 other tools, you're always ready.

Both multitools feature a nylon based sheath for easy gripping and use and come with a lightweight carry when in tow. Butterfly opening for both multitools and each has the ability to clip on pocket or even a lanyard.

The Edge: Gerber for the exterior locking tools and design

  • Durability

Leatherman’s products are made from high-quality materials and are built to last. The company offers a lifetime warranty on all of its products. This warranty covers any defects in materials or workmanship. Made from stainless steel and is designed to withstand years of use, it has been recommended by the US military and is used by police and fire departments around the world.

The Gerber Suspension multi-tool is a versatile and durable tool that is perfect for any number of tasks. The anodized aluminum body is strong and lightweight, making it easy to carry with you wherever you go. And the safety lock ensures that the tool will stay closed when not in use. Gerber is proud to offer a limited lifetime warranty on all products.

Overall both multitools are made from strong, long lasting materials that are built for the daily grind, wear and tear, and outdoors. Drop ‘em, drive over ‘em, toss them in a work bag and go in confidence. Both offer a form of warranty so you can trust it wont leave you in the woods.

The Edge: Tie for both warranty and overall construction

  • Grab Factor

Truth be told- both Leatherman and Gerber have a grab factor that makes you want to find more things to do with the tool. Carrying one around gives you the sensation that you need to cut something, trim something, fix something, or get to work! No matter which one you go with, bith rank high in the “Grab Factor” book.

Both feature plenty of tools, come with a limite warranty, fold for easy transport and carry, come with nylon sheath grips and are made in Oregon. Either one is a solid find in our book and are so close, it is too close to call.

The Edge: Leatherman for the amount of tools in the size model, Gerber for the handle design with built in exterior grip compartments

CONCLUSION: VERDIT

This is tough and almost too close to call. If you're looking for the most versatile option, Leatherman is probably your best bet. If you're looking for something a little more specialized, Gerber might be the way to go. Whichever brand you choose, you're sure to end up with a great product that will serve you well for many years to come.

LEATHERMAN: Winner of Overall Versatility

GERBER: Winner of Specialized Grip
