Practice the Setup

They say practice makes perfect. While we are still trying to figure out who the heck “they are” we do believe this ole montra to be true. Before you go out for your first hunting trip, be sure to practice setting up and taking down your tree stand (if you use one) before the season, and do so low on the tree. The goal is to be as quiet as possible to hone in the perfect alert-free setup. Getting in and out of your spot as quietly as possible is key to having a look at a the game you are hunting.

Clean Your Clothes

Do you smell that? If you can smell it, chances are what you are hunting can too. Don’t give away the perfect setup or spot by giving off your human odor. If you are struggling to land any form of “game”, you possibly might be giving off too much stank. Washing your hunting clothes in a non-scented detergent each time you’re heading to the woods helps to keep less of you noticeable out there. But don’t just wash clothes and put them on before you go- rather keep your clean clothes in a separate (non smelling) bag until you arrive at the hunting area.

Google Map the Area

Scoping out the hunting area, terrain, high and low spots before you head out is a solid idea. Knowing the region, paths, and wooded vs open areas can give you a better outline and map for setup and trapping. While some may have the luxury of doing a fly-over, you don’t have to drop the $ on a private plane or airline ticket to scope out the area. A simple Google Maps search of your hunting area can do wonders.

Familiarize Your Firearm

Many hunters we talk too all stress the importance of knowing your firearm (or in this case rifle) like the back of your hand. If you have recently upgraded your rig or you are thinking of grabbing a new rifle for the season, be sure to head to the range or get any form of practice shots in before you go. The last thing you want is that perfect Buck in your scope and your fired shot doesn’t land. Be sure to know the in and out of your setup before you go to lessen the chances that the game in your sights gets away.
