Grim Workshop: Grim Tool Systems Review
Getting it done with Grim
Grim Workshop says it best: Tools for what you need, when you need it.
The team over at Grim Workshop has been tackling the ultimate challenge of creating legit every day carry tools that are easy to carry yet practical. They single handedly have created a brand that infuses quality and innovation with their unique approach to tools for pretty much any type of outdoor (and indoor) activity that relies on tools to get it done.
Grim Workshop features plenty of everyday carry tools from Self Defense cards to Axe Cards and everything in between. Our crew wanted to test out some of their products to see just how the cards work and what functionality they deliver. We grabbed a hold of the Grim Workshop Key Card, Comb Micro Tool (because we have beards), and the Fishing Kit Dog Tag.
INITIAL IMPRESSIONS
We honestly didn't know what to expect right out of the box because we have never tried out any of Grim Workshop’s products before. We were anxiously awaiting to see what 3 products we were going to unpack as Grim sent us 3 various things that they felt gave variety to their shop. We cracked open the packaging to find 3 different yet equally usable products.
The Key Card was an instant hit among the crew because of the credit card sized (under 1mm thick) stainless steel multi tool card. It’s sleek design can fit into a wallet, pocket, or really anywhere that can hold a credit card sized object. The steel was solid and felt like it could really handle any job. So far we are digging the items sent.
Next we found the Micro Tool Comb that takes up about the same space as a large paper clip. The zipper like shape, clip on component and durable feel/texture was also a hit because of the amount of beards we have in the office. The comb while small was easily seen as a carry on tool that could go anywhere- onto a backpack zipper, keychain, necklace, small tin- wherever!
Last we cracked open the Dog Tag Fishing Kit. The kit was the same size as a standard dog tag and gave us all pause to consider that there was a fully functional fishing kit in that unit alone. Again, we found the ability to fit onto an existing necklace, chain, backpack- or wherever an instant hit.
Our overall duuude impression was that these 3 items, while small in size, pack quite the dynamic use for everyday carry.
TESTING IT OUT
Our favorite part of any review is trying the items out. We were fortunate enough to test out 3 of Grim Workshops’ Products: The Grim Key Card, The Micro Tool Comb, and the Dog Tag Fishing Kit. Three dynamic products with 3 valuable uses for any outdoor adventure.
Grim Key Card
The Grim Key Card is a lock disabling tool that can help out in everyday problems or emergency situations. The tool comes with a wide range of escape and picking tools as well as multi-tools including cuff key, shim, saw, and file. The stainless steel card is durable in your hand but not overly heavy. Just the right blend to trust it but not regret taking it because it weighs you down. It can easily be stored in your wallet, backpack, glove box or it can fasten with the adhesive backing to a slim wallet or top of a car visor.
The tools can handle almost any style lock (standard type). Simply insert the tension wrench into the key channel, and apply light pressure in the direction you would turn the key, insert your pick of choice and once all pins inside the lock have been lifted your lock will open.
While the tools themselves work well when put to the test, the retention system for storing them is even more innovative. The backing of the tool has semi-permanent adhesion allowing tools to be removed, and used as often as needed. Simply put them back into place when done. It was that easy. In just one card you get 5 picking tools, 2 tension wrenches, a cuff key, shim, and a file saw. The tool is made from highly corrosion resistant surgical grade hardened stainless steel. Good luck breaking this thing.
Micro Tool Comb
The Micro Comb is a personal grooming tool that gives the usability of a small comb in the size of a large paper clip. Yeah- no joke. While that seems too small to get the job done, it is by no means a crowd let down. The zipper sized tool can clip onto a backpack, keychain, necklace- practically anywhere with a clip.
We tried it out on a few beard lengths and our initial reaction was that the metal and pointed edges would scratch our faces. To our surprise the tool easily flows through the hair, pulling hairs down every so gently and giving the combing effect we have found with other beard combs. The teeth are felt on the skin but its not scratchy or painful. It was tried out on some of the crew’s domes and while it didn't handle heavy thick full length top hair, it did handle sides, beards, mustaches, and side-burns well.
The tool is under 1mm thick and the package comes with one comb and one clip for carry/fastening. Small comb- mighty results.
Dog Tag Fishing Kit
The Dog Tag Fishing Kit provides a fully functional fishing kit, all packed into the same size as a standard dog tag. It was easy to use- you just remove a hook from the adhesive backing, and thread in a fishing line. Seriously that's all- and you are on your way to casting in no time.
The dog tag sized tool can fit onto a necklace to be easily accessible and ready for use at any time. The dog tag comes with a small silencer that can hold up to 4 dog tags stacked onto each other. Whether around your neck or on a keyring, the large and small hooks enclosed inside the frame of the dog tag gives you ample fishing capabilities with very little space used.
The dog tag comes with 6 hooks, with 2 various sizes. The tag can be worn on any standard necklace sized chain and has a rubber silencer that fits around the tag.
