The One Sneaker That Goes With Everything You Own

The City Sneaker That Goes With Everything, Once You Break It In

Every guy needs one pair of sneakers that works with everything: jeans on Friday, chinos at dinner, joggers at the airport. Most "versatile" sneakers end up being plain white leather, which is great right up until the first barbecue scuff. Brooklyn-born GREATS took a different swing with the Manhattan City Runner: a clean runner silhouette in hand-finished suede that looks like it already has a few good miles on it, in the best way.

GREATS sent our crew a pair in Mineral Taupe, and we've been wearing them around town. (If you're still shopping around, we also broke down the TOMS lineup and HOKA vs Allbirds.) Here's what we liked, what bugged us, and who should grab a pair. Let's dig in.

What Makes the Manhattan City Runner Different?

Runner comfort, dress-shoe craftsmanship.

GREATS builds its sneakers more like a shoe brand than a sportswear brand. The Manhattan City Runner brings:

  • Premium Suede, Hand-Finished

Each pair gets an airbrushed finish along the seams and stitch lines, so no two pairs look exactly alike. It gives the Mineral Taupe that worn-in, vintage look right out of the box.

  • Handcrafted in Portugal

Made in Portugal with GREATS' signature tack-stitch detailing: the kind of build you'd expect from a dress shoe, not a gym sneaker.

  • Lightweight EVA Outsole

A thick, cushioned sole that stays light enough for a full day on your feet. GREATS pitches it as a 10k-steps-a-day city shoe.

  • Leather-Lined, Removable Footbed

The cushioned insole is lined in soft leather, and it pops out if you'd rather use your own.

  • Two Sets of Laces

Flat elastic laces come on the shoe, plus an extra cotton set if you want the classic look.

Men's sizes run 7 to 16, with half sizes from 8 through 11.5. GREATS' size finder on the product page tells you whether to size up or down.

How They Wear: Our Crew's Take

A little stiff at first, then they settle in.

Real talk: out of the box, the Manhattan felt a bit stiff. The suede and the structured build need a few wears to loosen up. Give them some time around town and they break in and get noticeably more comfortable, the way a good pair of boots does. Planning a big walking day? Wear them around the house a few times first.

Once they loosened up, we genuinely liked wearing them. And the color is the star. Mineral Taupe is that hard-to-name gray-brown that goes with a ton of outfits:

  • Dark Denim

The easy win. Dark jeans like the Bluffworks Departure Jeans and a Fresh Clean Threads tee, and you're done.

  • Chinos and a Button-Down

Dressy enough for dinner, relaxed enough that nobody thinks you tried too hard.

  • Joggers and a Hoodie

The travel-day uniform. The chunky sole keeps it from looking like you rolled out of bed.

What Could Be Better…

No sneaker is perfect, so here's the honest part:

  • Suede and Splashes Don't Mix

When ours got splashed, the suede picked up some spots. That's the trade-off with suede, and it means these aren't your rainy-day shoe. Hit them with a suede protector spray before the first wear and keep a suede brush handy.

  • A Break-In Period

They start out stiff. Not painful, but give them a few wears before a long day on your feet.

  • Premium Pricing

They're handcrafted in Portugal, and they're priced like it. Our code takes some of the sting out.

Who the Manhattan City Runner Is Best For

  • The one-sneaker guy who wants a pair that works with jeans, chinos and joggers

  • City walkers who want a cushioned runner that doesn't look like gym shoes

  • Anyone tired of white sneakers that look trashed after a month

Not for: puddle-stompers. If you're out in the rain a lot, look at one of GREATS' smooth leather styles instead.

The Final Duuude Take!

The GREATS Manhattan City Runner is the kind of sneaker you end up reaching for without thinking about it. The first few wears are a little stiff and the suede doesn't love getting splashed, but once they break in, they're comfortable, they look sharp, and the Mineral Taupe works with pretty much everything in your closet. Treat them like the nice suede shoes they are and they'll be your go-to city sneaker.

One sneaker, tons of outfits.
Break them in, keep them dry and wear them everywhere. Duuude-approved.
