The Winter Coat That Feels Like Your Favorite Hoodie
Sponsored: OROS sent our crew the Apex Parka and paid for this feature. Our score and opinions are our own.
Every winter it's the same trade. The warm coat makes you look like you're wearing a sleeping bag, and the good-looking coat leaves you cold by the second block. OROS has spent years on a different fix: insulation made from aerogel, a material OROS says was once reserved for NASA's most extreme missions.
Our crew has history here. Back in 2019 we sat in a restaurant walk-in freezer wearing their Orion Parka (yes, really). Now OROS has a new flagship, the Apex Parka: full-length, waterproof and built to move. They sent our crew one in Dried Sage, and we took it out on a cold, rainy night. Let's dig in.
Best for: guys who run cold but hate bulky coats
We liked: how soft and light it is, the fit, and staying warm on a cold, rainy night
Our color: Dried Sage, one of five
What Makes the Apex Parka Different?
Warmth from a layer a few millimeters thin, not a pile of fluff.
The Apex Parka is the newest coat in the OROS lineup. Here is what OROS packed into it:
SOLARCORE® Aerogel Insulation
OROS says aerogel is 99.8% air, "the lightest, most efficient insulator ever created," and its SOLARCORE layers are 2mm to 3mm thin.
Mapped to Where You Lose Heat
The insulation sits in your core, where you lose the most heat, and backs off where you run warm.
Waterproof and Fully Seam-Sealed
Rain stays on the outside, with a draft collar at the neck and waist and comfort cuffs inside the sleeves.
Built to Move
A new fit and articulated patterning let you reach, climb and carry without the coat pulling, and the back hem stays flat when you walk.
Machine Washable
OROS says all its gear goes in the washer and the dryer.
Aerogel vs Down vs Synthetic
Most winter coats trap warm air in bulk. Aerogel does it in a thin layer.
Down
Fluffy clusters trap warm air. It's warm for its weight, but that puff is the bulk, and it loses loft when it gets soaked.
Synthetic Fill
Polyester fibers trap warm air. It handles damp better than down, but it takes more bulk to get as warm.
SOLARCORE Aerogel
A thin layer that OROS says repels water, blocks wind and keeps insulating when wet. In OROS’s own demo, a jacket blasted with liquid nitrogen at -321°F held 89°F inside.
That's the pitch. Here's how it felt in real weather.

A thin aerogel layer instead of a pile of fluff. OROS says aerogel is 99.8% air and its layers are 2mm to 3mm thin.
An insulated, adjustable hood with a structured front brim and a drawcord around the face.
Unzip from the bottom to sit down or reach a pocket without opening the whole coat. Snaps on the placket release faster now.
Four on the outside and one inside, so your phone and keys stay put. OROS reshaped the pocket openings for easier reach.
A draft collar at the neck and waist and comfort cuffs inside the sleeves seal in the warm air.
A 36-inch length with a back hem cut to stay flat while you walk, and a magnetic hem closure.
How It Wears: Our Crew's Take
Soft, light and warm on the kind of night most coats lose.
The first surprise: it's extremely soft for a jacket. Waterproof parkas usually feel stiff and crinkly. This one doesn't. It's also lightweight, so you get full parka coverage without feeling like you're hauling a sleeping bag around.
The fit is spot on. Our crew wears a large, and the large fit perfectly, which backs up OROS's true-to-size sizing.
Then the real test. We wore it out on a cold, rainy night, the kind that usually has you counting the minutes until you're back inside. We stayed comfortable and warm the whole time.
And the color is perfection. Dried Sage is a soft, muted green-gray that looks great with any look. A few ways our crew would wear it:
Out to Dinner
Dark Bluffworks Departure Jeans, a Fresh Clean Threads tee and the GREATS Manhattan City Runner.
Weekend Errands
A hoodie and joggers underneath. Zip it up and you look put-together anyway.
The Workday
Chinos and a button-down, with the parka over the top.
Ours is Dried Sage. Tap a color to shop it. Sizes run S to XXL, and OROS says to size up if you are between sizes.

What Could Be Better…
No coat is perfect, so here's the honest part:
Premium Pricing
Aerogel isn't cheap, and the Apex is priced like the flagship it is. It's a coat you buy for years of winters, not an impulse grab.
No Temperature Rating
OROS doesn't publish a temperature rating for the Apex, so you're going on feel. Ours kept us warm on a cold, rainy night, but if you're heading somewhere truly frigid, plan on layering underneath.
Sizes Stop at XXL
The Apex runs S to XXL, with no big and tall sizes, so bigger guys may be out of luck.
A Long Coat Behind the Wheel
At 36 inches down the back, it may bunch up on you while driving, if you like to keep your coat on in the car. The two-way zipper helps: unzip it from the bottom before you sit.
Try It On at Home
OROS takes back unworn gear with the tags on within 21 days, so check the fit before your first big night out.
Who the Apex Parka Is Best For
Guys who run cold but hate bulky coats
Rainy-city winters: it’s waterproof and fully seam-sealed
Commuters and travelers who want one coat that looks good over anything
Not for: guys who want a short, sporty jacket. The OROS Voyager or Itinerant Jacket below fits that better.
Not a parka guy? Every OROS men’s piece runs on the same aerogel insulation. Descriptions from OROS; photos: OROS.
The parka that put OROS on the map, and the one our crew tested in a walk-in freezer back in 2019. Full-length, fully seam-sealed, with a bonded storm flap.
SOLARCORE warmth in a rugged shirt-jacket cut. OROS pitches it as your final layer around 40°F, or a mid-layer when it gets frigid.
The all-day jacket that goes from the commute to the meeting to happy hour, with body-mapped insulation and a zippered chest pocket.
Feels like your favorite full-zip hoodie, with the same SOLARCORE insulation as the parkas and a funnel collar for cold mornings.
